The hospital was originally established fromn 1927 as Rockland State Hospital with 5768 beds. By its peak in 1959 Rockland had more than 9000 residents and a staff of 2000 on a sprawling campus. By the 1970s the inpatient population had been greatly reduced. The 1930s and 1940s buildings on the majority of the site have been abandoned and are closed to the public.
